The timeline

See your story take shape.

Before you write, you need to know where you are going. Not the finished story. Just enough to start. Who is in which scene. Which plotlines are running. Where the story thins out.

The timeline gives you that map. Add scenes as you think of them. Drop characters into the scenes they belong in. Watch the plotlines take shape across the top. Nothing is fixed. Move things around until the shape feels right.

When you sit down to write, you will know what you are writing toward. Try the interactive timeline below:

The graph

Spot the gaps before you write.

Most writers only notice an isolated character when they reach the end of a draft. The graph shows you earlier.

Every character in your story appears as a node. The more scenes two share, the stronger the line between them. Characters with many connections pull toward the centre. Characters sitting at the edge have fewer connections. Sometimes that's intentional. Sometimes it's a problem worth fixing..

Filter by relationship, shared scenes Tap a line to see exactly which scenes two characters share. The graph doesn't just show you who is in your story. It shows you who is missing from it. Try the interactive graph below:

The cards

Five pieces that build your outline.

Characters, scenes, plotlines, world events, and locations. Cards are the backbone of Narrativ. Together, they hold every piece of your story and connect to one another, so the whole shape comes into view as you build it.
